18th April, 2026. I noticed this colourful and stylish gentleman as he walked past the Milage shop sign, Deal High Street, and saw that his red hat matched it perfectly. He introduced himself as ‘Wretched Richard’, and when I asked him what he did for a living he simply said that it was rather complicated. A little research later revealed that it was also hugely impressive. Richard Cawley studied fashion in Paris at the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne and life drawing at the École des Beaux-Arts. He was later accepted into the Fashion School of the Royal College of Art in London. He worked at the fashion house of Bellville Sassoon designing clothes for many royal ladies, especially Princess Diana. Richard went on to write and illustrate many well-known cookery books, including Not Quite Vegetarian and The Artful Cook and countless travel and cookery articles in magazines and national newspapers. Richard also worked extensively in television as a writer-presenter, including Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. He cooked frequently on several cult shows such as Can't Cook, Won't Cook and Ready Steady Cook. He regularly appears in pantomime and has published a novel - The Butterfly Boy.
