The plaque records the journey made by William Penn, who sailed from Deal on 30th August 1682 to Pennsylvannia in his ship the 'Welcome'. Penn's arrival founded the Province of Pennsylvannia in the British Colonial Era. The plaque was presented by the Welcome Society of Pennsylvannia on 6th May 1982.

Graham Dear, a former Regimental Sergeant Major in the Royal Marines and bodyguard to the Queen. Graham was made an MBE in the New Year Honours in 1989 for his service to the Royal Marines. He was later the Principal Doorkeeper at the House of Commons, responsible for the security of the Chamber. In 2014, Graham was awarded the Royal Victorian Medal in recognition of his role in the Queen’s Body Guard of the Yeoman of the Guard. The medal is only awarded to members of the Royal Household. When I met him in Deal Town Centre, he had won a golf match that morning with a massive score of 46 points. The flowers were for his dear wife. 29th March, 2025.
